A time delay occurs in the application of feedback-type controls to flexible structures due to the finite response time of sensors and actuators. This, in turn, may destabilize the system as a result of the time lag between the information and the actuation. The present study investigates the stabilization of damped structural systems by velocity feedback control when there is a time delay in applying the control. The conditions under which the system remains stable are derived and the asymptotic stability is studied. It is shown that the velocity feedback increases the rate of decay of the system energy. Interrelation of various problem parameters are numerically investigated by considering some numerical examples of structurally damped beams.
