PRO-MINDS: development of a software tool to support the measurement system designer

A software tool 'MINDS' has been developed to assist designers establish the multi-sensor system required to extract particular knowledge needed about an observed object or event. It also serves as the initial step for driving automated sensor system design in a larger system under development. A revised Prolog implementation, 'PRO-MINDS', running in a graphic environment on a Macintosh, is described. It is shown that the underlying concept has been proven to be effective and that this version of the tool is sufficiently rugged for regular use. Conduct and results of trials of its use are described in fields of engineering and medical research. Directions for future research in multi-sensor system specification support are discussed.
