The new innovations in smelting technology, although aimed at efficient and economic production of copper also offer the ancillary benefits of air pollution control. Pollution free hydrometallurigcal processes for the recovery of copper are currently receiving considerable attention. However, much remains to be done before these processes can challenge the pyrometallurgical extraction.
