A satisfactory homogeneity of test samples is necessary in order to gurantee the validity of the results of laboratory tests. Up to the present, methods of compacting moulded samples with a slenderness equal to or greater than 2 have not been satisfactory from this point of view. This is why core-sampled and sawn samples are used in the plates compacted with the pneumatic laboratory compactor. The method of compaction described makes it possible to mitigate these drawbacks, and is also less costly. With the new method, the material to be compacted is subjected to a combination of circular vibration in the horizontal plane throughout its height, and to an increasing vertical force. The authors describe the compacting machine.
