The widespread utilization of acoustic level meters in industry has created a demand for the testing of these instruments during their manufacture and operation with a high degree of reliability and at minimum cost. Testing complications can be avoided by using a simulation method to test the level meters; this approach entails simulation of the level variations of the tested medium by a variable electrical delay of the data-return acoustic signal from the level meter relative to the sensing signal. The delay time, which is proportional to the level, is compared with the value of the instrument output signal. A special-purpose UPU-35I simulation apparatus has been developed for the implementation of this method with the specific capability of checking out and testing all types of acoustic level meters. It is shown that the simulation method for the testing and checking of EKhO-series acoustic level meters promotes a sharp reduction in the cost and time expenditures of this process.
