This review of worldwide automotive trends focuses on the challenges which will influence the development of engine oils and fuels as a result of exhaust emission legislation and the advent of unleaded petrol. Longer intervals between oil changes will require a new generation of suitable lubricants from the oil industry. The development and early introduction of continuously variable transmission (CVT) systems, allied to electronic aids could show a significant benefit to fuel economy.
