摘要：

A new criterion of strength is presented that synthesizes the viewpoints of continuum mechanics and those of fracture mechanics. The essential features of the criterion consist of taking into account the influence of the stress-field in some neighborhood of the fracturing locus and the quality of the surface layer. The resulting mathematical model is compared with some experimental data.
