Mondi hopes to reach an agreement with a local pressure group, the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA), over plans to install a multi-fuel boiler at its Merebank mill. But the pressure group is strongly opposing the project. Its members staged a protest at the site on May 12, 2004 and threatened to boycott Mondi's paper. Members want Mondi to stop burning coal altogether and switch to a cleaner fuel like gas. The Mondi spokesperson said switching to gas would be expensive.
