A finite element dynamic model for a side-mounted cam shaft and an overhead valve train is proposed in this paper. The advantages of modelling research on the dynamics of such a train are discussed. The natural frequency and the dynamic response of the valve trains of the two diesels (S6102 Diesel and PD6H Diesel) were calculated by the finite element model and by a single-mass model, and were verified by testing on a S6102 Diesel. The influence of the calculated data upon the kinematic smoothness of a valve train is discussed.
