Researchers present their views on the study of tetraethyl orthosilicate hydrolysis by in situ generation of water. The researchers state that silylenium ions cannot be invoked as reasonable intermediates in silicon alkoxide hydrolysis mechanisms. There is ample precedent for fivecoordinate silicon species, which are plausible intermediates in rationalizing displacements from silicon alkoxides.
