Starting out from the existing tramway system, a light rail rapid transit system is being developed in Stuttgart. An integral component of the system is an efficient and attractive vehicle which was specifically developed for the city of Stuttgart. Following an order for the development of the 'S DT 8' and the production of three prototypes, a series of 40 vehicles was ordered which have been in service since 1985/86. This paper reports on the experience gained with the new light rail rapid transit car.
