The impact of voids on vertical and lateral load carrying capacity during driving of H-piles is analyzed. The driven H-pile system was selected to support a series of long, thin-shelled bullets sensitive to settlements at the Alberta Envirofuels Inc. MTBE plant. Site conditions, pile installation procedures, void creation mechanisms and actions made to reinstate pile capacity and containment liner integrity are also described. Grouting, which was undertaken to reestablish the soil to pile contact (primarily for lateral support) and to plug the perforations created through the clay liner, was initiated on September 30, 1990 and was completed in two days. Grouting was found to be an effective method for the purpose stated above.
