SECONDARY FIBERS.

This paper summarizes the recently released study, ″Analysis of demand and supply for secondary fiber in the US paper and paperboard industry.″ The three-volume report, published late last year, was done by Arthur D. Little Inc. for the Office of Solid Waste Managment Programs of the US Environmental Protection Agency. This article is extracted from Volume II of the study, entitled ″Process Economics,″ and deals with the potentials of newsprint and linerboard made using secondary fiber. It examines the economics of each process in relation to mill location and size, secondary fiber supply and raw material costs. The full study also covers other uses of secondary fibers, such as corrugating medium, bleached board and fine papers.
