Based on the results of an investigation of the effect of mold wall thickness on the solidification time of Al-12% Si castings, a simple equation has been derived which gives a close estimate of the solidification time when the wall thickness is known. The indirect effect of mold wall thickness on the as-cast structure of the Al-Si castings was verified experimentally and, based on the results obtained, a quantitative relationship was established.
