The UK manufacturing economy showed a pick-up in activity during July 2000. The composite PMI index recorded 51.8 after three months of negligible growth. The prospect of the economy dipping into recession is a concern. Stronger growth from the domestic market was the cause behind the uptick. Production increased slightly to meet higher demand but growth remained below the levels. Stocks of finished goods were also run down as part of cost-cutting measures.
