TECHNICAL EVALUATION OF A GLASS INSULATED CABLE SYSTEM.

Results are presented on the evaluation of the electrical properties of the new glass, the development of seals to join sections of glass, and the mechanical and electrical tests of sealed tubular glass samples. Analysis of the results shows that the glass is a good insulator with low ac losses, very low dc losses, and good dielectric strength. The seals between glass sections have an electrical strength substantially lower than that of the parent glass; more reliable seals must be developed before the glass cable system is technically feasible. The glass itself is considered a good choice for applications where seals are not required, such as high-temperature entrance bushings, or standoff insulators.
