The crucial theoretical role of bonding in developing tensile strength in paper and nonwovens is discussed in relation to enthalpic interfiber bond energies in general. The specific shortcomings of typical water soluble vinyl polymers as adhesives for cellulose are outlined and the DNA-inspired concept of multicenter hydrogen bonding is presented as a new means of securing enhanced fiber-polymer interactions. Adhesive comparison of a representative copolymer of APDMI-acrylamide (4:96) with polyacrylamide in webs of regular and markedly anionic rayon fibers is used to show that ionic bonding does not contribute to the significant enhancement in tensile strength engendered by the presence of multicenter hydrogen bonding sites in small amounts.
