This paper reviews the techniques available for tank calibration and indicates their relative merits and disadvantages. Although tanks can be calibrated by internal or external measurement, the latter are more commonly used. Some measurements of the hydrostatic distortion which occurs as a tank is filled are compared with theoretical predictions of distortion.
