Disc-bowl centrifuges are used to remove solids from liquids, and to separate immiscible liquids. There are several types of disc-bowl centrifuges; all induce powerful centrifugal forces, equivalent to thousands of gravities, and offer a large amount of settling surface in a small volume. So they are often a good alternative to gravity settlers, filters, and other means of separating solids and liquids. This article explains how disc-bowl centrifuges work, and when to consider using them.
