The surface hardening methods were a combined one (case-hardening plus surface plastic deformation - SPD) for the 12KhN3A(12CrNi3) steel and SPD only for the 40khNMA (40CrNiMo) steel for the sake of comparison. The combined surface hardening is stated to secure a higher fatigue strength only in specimens with a stress concentrator. The stress-concentration sensitivity of SPD-treated steel appeared to be the same as that of steel subjected to combined surface hardening. The sensitivity factor magnitude depends on the actual stress level only for specimens untreated by surface hardening.
