Nova Gas Transmission Ltd. recently pilot tested a new control and information system architecture at four natural gas compressor stations. An existing PLC based control system was integrated with a newer NT based Client/Server computing infrastructure to deliver: A modern Man-Machine Interface; A thin Client application to allow technical staff to remotely view operating screens and data; and An NT based software gateway to link the PLC control network to an Ethernet TCP/IP information network allowing users to remotely troubleshoot and modify on-line PLC programs. The architectural principles of design are: openness, flexibility, scalability and modularity, allowing future applications and functional enhancements to be readily integrated. This paper discusses the background business drivers leading to the pilot, the technical results, benefits, project management issues, and plans for system wide roll-out.
