Detailed data on various aspects of motor transportation in Italy are given. In Italy, in 1972, there were in circulation, among others, 12,484,313 automobiles, 979,270 trucks, 4,080,112 motor buses, and 4,080,112 other vehicles distributed between three-wheeled commercial vehicles, motorcycles and mopeds of various types. On the basis of the number of motor vehicles in circulation, the approximate costs of transport carried out with the more common types of motor vehicles, as well as the average annual distance covered and the average load of each of them, it is calculated that in that same year 1972, transport amounted to 336 billion passenger-kms. and about 59 billion ton-kms. , with a total cost of 14,239 billion lire.
