LECTURES ON CRYSTAL FIELD THEORY.

A series of lectures given from November 2 through December 2, 1981, is presented. The early work done at the Harry Diamond Laboratories (HDL) and the motivation for that work is given in the first lecture. Later lectures cover work done at HDL in the recent past as well as ongoing research on crystal-field interactions and crystal-field effects, including theory, point-charge models, classical and developed at HDL, self-consistent point dipole and mulitpole, Scheelite structure, self-induced effects, Judd's interaction for two electrons, Slater integral shifts, and shifts in the energy gap. Angular momentum algebra and free rare-earth ion interactions are also considered. Some lectures are interspersed with other lectures to familiarize the audience with the notation employed at HDL. The last few lectures contain matter under investigation presently at HDL and other laboratories in the U. S. and Europe.
