Sand/water slurries were employed to study erosion in horizontal pipe flow. The tests were carried out in a 3. 56 cm ID stainless steel pipe loop and the erosion rate was measured by means of brass coupons mounted flush with the pipe surface. The erosion rate at a constant velocity is shown to vary around the pipe periphery, the maximum and minimum occurring at the pipe bottom and top, respectively. A simple expression is tentatively proposed for estimating maximum erosion rates, which are expected to occur at the bottom and near the inlet of commercial pipelines.
