Problems in the use of industrial robots for automating the assembly of mechanical engineering products in batch manufacture are analyzed. Two basic configurations of adjustable assembly systems that differ in their productivity are presented. Typical assembly units (sets) that are suitable for automatic assembly are identified in the assembled product. An experimental adjustable assembly system based on numerically controlled industrial robots that was built at ENIMS for the automatic assembly of one of the typical assembly sets is described.
