CENTRIFUGAL CLUTCH BASICS.

Centrifugal clutches help relieve stresses by automatically limiting the torque transmitted between drive and load. They have these characteristics: automatic engagement at a predetermined speed; torque-carrying ability that is a function of the square of prime mover speed; soft starting (high slip during start-up); no slip at rated speed. Their advantages and a method of selection are explained. Some pitfalls are pointed out.
