We present the results of studies of the structure of the subsurface layers of a high-speed steel tool in machining 40Kh construction steel. It is found that the near-contact regions of the high-speed steel tool change their structure significantly during operation. We present experimental data making it possible to identify the metallophysical processes leading to 'white zone' formation in the cutting wedge of the tool during operation and intensifying tool wear. We examine the high-speed steel tool wear mechanism and present the results of studies of the influence of hard coatings on tool life. We examine the wear mechanism of a high-speed tool with titanium nitride coating.
