The moment-transmitting, welded endplate connection has grown in popularity to the point where it is now believed to be the most widely used beam-to-column connection in building structures. Full utilization of these connections depends on a knowledge of behavior at both ultimate and service loads. The paper attempts to establish the necessary joint 'characteristics' using finite-element-based theoretical modeling. The theoretical results are compared with experimental observations and a limit state design method for flush endplate connections is proposed. The design data presented use a recommended standardization of details for 'flush' and 'extended' endplates.
