Two kinds of mines are presented: gold mines and platinum mines. After a description of the production of precious metals in the world and in South Africa, the deposits are described with their characteristics and specific problems which have to be solved when mining. Afterwards the mining methods are described, followed by a sketch on the organisation of a mine in South Africa. Finally, a few particular and specific points of the South African mining industry of precious metals are underlined.
