The 1. 3 mu m wavelength opto-electronic integrated circuits (OEICs) are expected as new components which meet the requirements for high speed, miniaturization and high reliability of optical transmitters and receivers. The OEIC for optical transmitters consists of a laser diode and a driver circuit. The OEIC for optical receivers consists of a pin-PD and a preamplifier. The paper describes the basic characteristics of the OEICs. For the first step of the application of the OEICs to high-speed optical transmission systems, the transmission characteristics of the OEICs at a bit rate of 200Mb/sec are shown. The obtained basic characteristics and transmission characteristics show that the OEICs have sufficient quality for 12km optical transmission at a bit rate of 200 Mb/sec.
