The worldwide picture of energy consumption reveals profound structural changes. Energy consumption in Europe and the United States receded, while in China, southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa consumption is on the rise. The article presents worldwide statistics of energy resources and consumption expressed in tons of petroleum equivalents. It states that in 1983 in the course of economic recovery energy consumption returned to the 1979 level of 6,925 million tons of petroleum equivalents.
