MAGNETIC DIPOLE ANISOTROPY AND MAGNETOSTRICTION OF RARE-EARTH ORTHOFERRITES.

Calculations are reported of the magnetic-dipole contribution to the first anisotropy constants of various planes of all rare-earth orthoferrites RFeO//3, where R is a rare-earth or yttrium ion. The results indicate a definite correlation between these contributions and the degree of orthorhombic distortion which increases along the series from LaFeO//3 to LuFeO//3. Calculations are also reported of the magnetoelastic energy and of the magnetic-dipole contribution to magnetostriction and magnetoelastic constants. (AIP)
