The majority of this new breed of rigs for the North Sea are of the semi-submersible type and therefore mooring members, be they chain or rope, will obviously play a major role in the overall efficiency of the unit and must therefore be carefully designed to meet the requirements at hand. The restraining forces necessary to hold a rig on exact location are, in the case of wire rope anchorage systems, achieved by the dampening forces due to the change in shape of the catinary, and secondly the elastic characteristics of the rope itself.
