Reserves of good quality non-coking coal in the country are limited. A large proportion of the coal seams are highly interbanded. During mining these bands of shale and stone get extracted alongwith coal, therby contaminating the quality of ROM coal. At present, power sector is consuming around 70% of such non-coking coal. By adopting some mechancial methods, it is possible to eliminate such impurities. In this direction, use of jig technology through Romjig and Batac jig, individually or in combination, will produce coal of desired ash content and consistent quality which will greatly improve the productivity of power sector. The present paper describes the working of the Romjig and Batac jig, alongwith technical and other details, including their expected performance in reducing the ash units of the ROM coal and economics thereof.
