This paper describes in detail the development of the most favorable conditions for specimen preparation by potentiostatic etching for electron microscope investigations of chromium carbide precipitates in a ferritic 17% Cr steel, and of chromium carbide and chromium nitride precipitates in Cr-Ni-N steels with 18% Cr and 9 or 14% Ni.
