An abandoned (after some 100 yr of operation) iron ore mine located in Northwest of France, close to the British Channels' Caen port, has been converted into an underground, crude petroleum storage reservoir with a capacity of 5-million cu mi (about 31-million bbl). Design of the reservoir and operation of the facility are described.
