This special report first offers a brief review of the operating principles behind the more popular kinds of machines, and then presents an update on the latest grinding technology. Rather than focus on the specific motions of individual machines, the report discusses various types of grinding machines according to the type of workpiece surface they are designed to handle. After discussing the basic operating principles used in three general types of machines that perform the grinding function, the report focuses on the grinding wheels themselves, including some of the latest advances in standard abrasives and their bonding, and in the newer diamond and superabrasive wheels. The dynamics of the grinding interface itself are covered as this is an area where much of the latest research is focused.
