Adsorption and electrooxidation of barbiturates at the platinum electrode

The basic trends in the adsorption and electrooxidation of barbituric acid, ethaminal sodium, hexenal, phenobarbital, and thiopental sodium at the platinum electrode were studied in connection with the problem of an electrochemical detoxification of the body in cases of barbiturate poisoning. The adsorb-abilities of the barbiturates increase in the order of ethaminal sodium < hexenal < phenobarbital < thiopental sodium, while the oxidation rates decrease in this order. The influence of chloride ions on the adsorption and oxidation of the barbiturates was studied, since these ions are chief component of biological fluids.
