Drill-pipe protectors offer the best way to prevent excess casing wear, but they frequently slip and fail under high load. It is shown how the proper selection of protector type and a knowledge of operating conditions can reduce failures. In addition, the test results indicate that drill-pipe-protector quality control needs to be improved. Drill-pipe protectors from four manufacturers were evaluated. Part 1 of a four-part series.
