Intel pioneered the system concept with their iSBX system. Today, customized single board microcomputers are used widely in applications such as industrial controls, telecommunications equipment and computer peripherals. During its development, the iSBX system required a special miniaturized printed circuit board connector that met performance and reliability standards of existing full size connectors. Basically the new connector had to be half the height of existing connectors so the add-on boards could fit between the computer boards in a conventional card rack system. This article describes the development of the new contact spring design and the material selection.
