A modern vessel compared with one 10 years ago could be designed to consume half the fuel for the same voyage and cargo. However, not every innovation is cost effective and a reduction of 30 to 40 per cent would be a more realistic figure. It is this kind of improvement which can make a conversion worthwhile, with perhaps a two- or three-year pay back period envisaged.
