Determination of hardened zone parameters in hardening by a scanning laser beam

We present the results of a study of the influence of the regimes of hardening by a scanning laser beam on the depth and width of the hardened tracks and propose an analytic relation for their determination. It is shown that in the case of hardening of 50% of the specimen surface area the wear resistance is comparable with that of nitrided specimens, which gives a basis for replacing nitriding by hardening with a scanning laser beam with hardened zone depth 0.4-0.5 mm.
