A program written in basic FORTRAN is proposed for computer aided design of shafts and axles. With this program the minimum diameter of a shaft or axle can be determined from its three-dimensional stress profile and geometrically determined elements can be tested for fatigue strength. As a result, a minimum profile of the diameter variation of a shaft is obtained, as well as the related bending moments and shear forces, and a verifying calculation of fatigue fracture safety factors can subsequently be carried out for selected diameters, notch depths, and notch radii.
