Phase relationships in the system MgO-FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2 have been determined in air, at temperatures between 1300 and 1700°C, using ceramography, X-ray diffraction and microanalysis of equilibrated and quenched compositions. Isoplethal sections at silica contents from 5 to 50% were investigated. The results obtained enabled corrections to be proposed to known early data, demonstrated the fluxing effect of simultaneous additions of silica and iron oxide to periclase and provided a description of the attack of iron oxide-silica slags on magnesia.
