Optical fiber systems operating in the 0. 8-0. 9 mu m region have achieved a sufficient maturity to allow their introduction in the public telecommunication network. These systems are particularly suited for use in the junction and distribution areas, as well as in applications outside the public telecommunication network. In the trunk network, systems operating at longer wavelengths (1. 3 and 1. 55 mu m) are preferable, as they allow much longer repeater spacings; however, as these systems are less mature, ″first window″ systems are presently used also in several long-distance links. The paper deals with fibers, sources and detectors, optical systems and existing applications of the short wavelength technology, with some discussion about their possible future use.
