A bolt imposes a load on an object on which it bears by means of translating a torque applied to the bolt head into a force on the object. An equal and opposite force then acts on the bolt. The stress system in the bolt is the results of the torque applied to the bolt and the force brought to bear on the object on which the bolt acts. Before detailed analysis of the stress system in a bolt can be undertaken it is necessary to determine the force and torque distribution relating to the bolt. A feasible means of evaluating force generated by a bolt for torque applied to the bolt is provided by the 'work done' concept. Analytical methods, equations and examples for calculating bolt forces and stresses are presented.
