The NEC uPD7500 family of 4-bit CMOS microcomputers incorporates several hardware and software features which before have only been found in 8-bit chips, as well as some which are new with the family. The growth of the 4-bit microcomputer from its humble origins, through the needs of applications and improvements in capability is examined.
