The important role of customized machinery and cutting tools in the woodworking industry today is well understood by most manufacturing engineers. But a new trend is growing fast, say members of the Wood Machinery Manufacturers of America - customized software for woodworking equipment. It is shown that the need for this customized software arises from the increasing use of programmable logic controllers instead of mechanical and electrical relays and from the use of computer numerical control, which requires an onboard computer instead of a PLC. Some examples of the use of customized software in the woodworking industry are cited.
