As early as 1959 the potential use of satellites for effective international satellite communications was recognized. This paper reviews the activities of the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (INTELSAT), outlines its accomplishments and technological innovations. Geosynchronous communications, stabilized satellite antennas, satellite frequency re-use, multipurpose satellites, and INTELSAT business services are reviewed along with some political, organizational and legislative problems.
