3. The Ice Pilot Applications Programme ([PAP) system Iceberg-detection at GEC-Marconi Research Centre is carried out within the context of a sea-ice workstation (the 'IPAP' system) which has been developed with funding from the British National Space Centre. The project began in 1992 and has involved three polar operators (Canarctic Shipping; Nunaoil and BP); who have played a key role in setting the requirements for the study. This system uses spaceborne SAR data to generate ice charts suitable for facsimile or digital transmission to ships. The components of the system which are of interest here are the preprocessing and iceberg-detection components; but other components deal with sea-ice classification and motion;
